New York, NY – JanKossen Contemporary is pleased to present Dialogue, a two-person show featuring American Troy Simmons and German artist Harald Schmitz-Schmelzer, on view from September 6, 2018 – October 8, 2018. Although visually both artists appear to be radically different, from Simmons’ bioorganic and deconstructive aesthetic in contrast to the precise geometric clean lines of Schmitz-Schmelzer, both artists carefully engineer each of their works; For Simmons, this involves building and constructing his pieces and then breaking the forms out of the concrete. Inversely, Harald Schmitz-Schmelzer’s process involves freeing the resin sculpture from the constructed molds he crates.
Troy Simmons explores the idea of the Anthropocene and humanity’s destructive relationship with the planet. He plays with the viewer’s notions of nature by depicting it as an independent entity which can fight back against man-made materials. Simmons describes his work as an exploration of incompatible binary relationships; his work exposes how these opposite forces have the ability to coexist in balance.
Inspired by nature’s persistence to co-exist despite the impact we impose, Simmons’ work is a contemporary reimagining of the Arte Povera movement, particularly in the beautification of everyday objects and the bold juxtaposition between traces of nature and industry. However, rather than presenting the objects simply as they are, Simmons creates a dynamic sculpture wherein the materials work both with and against each other.
Conversely, the creations of Harald Schmitz-Schmelzer draw inspiration from nature and ancient culture’s most elemental forms, functioning as contemporary manifestations. Through a technique evolved over years of experimentation, the pigmented resin is poured in parallel or vertical layers onto a base of raw tropical wood.

Monochrome : A group exhibition featuring Troy Simmons

(New York, NY) - Monochrome, a curated group
exhibition showcasing selected artists from JanKossen Contemporary’s
international program, will be on view from May 31 – July 14, 2018 with
an opening reception from 6-8pm on May 31, 2018. The exhibition will
feature artworks by Troy Simmons (USA), Dieter Kränzlein (Germany),
Hannah Quinlivan (Australia), and Ye Jin-Young (South Korea) which
explore the concept of monochromatic abstract art. An online catalogue
will accompany the exhibition.

"Simmons’ work is vivid and vibrant, but equally commonplace.
He utilizes mundane materials, recalling building construction rather than
traditional mediums of making art "… Troy Simmons’ recent feature in Miami Rail provides a glimpse into his process. The Miami-based artist’s medium is a
combination of wood, metal mesh, concrete and aluminum within a grid, creating
a collage of expression. Simmons will be presented at VOLTA NY by JanKossen Contemporary Gallery, New York.

VOLTA NY is the invitational fair of solo artist projects and is
the American incarnation of the original Basel VOLTA show, which was founded in
2005 by three art dealers as a fair "by galleries, for galleries".
Since its debut in New York in 2008, Artistic Director Amanda
Coulson re-conceived the format as a rigorously curated, boutique event — along
the lines of a sequence of intense studio visits versus a traditional trade
show environment. Since then VOLTA NY showcases relevant contemporary art
positions from emerging international artists, from cutting-edge trendsetters
to next year’s rising stars. Coupled with its approachable solo-booth format,
the VOLTA team has created a fair that is both accessible to younger art-lovers
and beloved by seasoned collectors alike. By spotlighting artists through
primarily solo projects, VOLTA NY refocuses the art fair experience back to its
most fundamental point: the artists and their works. A beacon for creative
discovery during Armory Arts Week, VOLTA NY is likewise aligned with some of
the best and boldest local cuisine and design collaborators in the city.
In March 2018, VOLTA NY returns to PIER 90 adjacent to The Armory
Show, the longtime anchor of Armory Arts Week on Piers 94 and 92. The Armory
Show and VOLTA NY are affiliate fairs that provide complementary visions of the
international contemporary art world. Both fairs share mutually acknowledged
VIP access.

MIAMI, FL: Much of the recent history of Wynwood has involved artists turning what was once a drab warehouse district into a vibrant, colorful hub for culture and the arts. The revitalization clearly inspired artist Troy Simmons, whose latest exhibition at the Bakehouse Art Complex, "The Open House," involves ripping open aluminum and concrete industrial structures to reveal color within. He exhibited with Tom Scicluna, whose work focuses on the recontextualization of everyday objects.
South African-born contemporary art curator Clair Breukel was the creative force behind this exhibition. Here's her synopsis of the show:
"A real estate term for inviting prospective buyers to survey a home, “Open House” signifies open doors, an invitation for inspection and the possibility of acquisition. During this process one might study house’s make up including its windows and doors, and ask revealing questions about the materials of its core foundation. The Open House is not then a home, but a gallery of its own display.
In the exhibition The Open House, Troy Simmons proposes structural anomalies that are at once uniform in their concrete and aluminum construction, yet protruding, geometrically twisted and formally ‘different.’ Inviting closer inspection, Simmons’ works instigate interaction by seductively revealing bands of colorful neon enamel, which subtly position the human body within these reinvented urban forms. Simmons opens a door and a window for discovery.
In real estate, Open Houses expose private interiors to public eyes. However rules dictate visitors to be passive lookers. In other words, the personal is made only marginally public. Intervention in this open forum—either removing or adding objects—although possibly illegal and definitely frowned upon, is an entirely plausible and easily attainable action.
Purposefully overturning procedural behavioral Tom Scicluna finds objects from the everyday and recontextualizes them by proposing situations and constructs that displace, disrupt and renew these objects. In this way, Scicluna brushes up against institutional norms by rethinking traditional formats of exhibition and methods for processing art. Politely, humorously, and often times importantly uncomfortably, Tom Scicluna intervenes". -

Knight Arts Foundation Names Troy Simmons finalists in Arts Challenge Miami
MIAMI,FL – Miami artist Troy Simmons, in partnership with the Bakehouse Art Complex, was selected as a finalists in the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Knight Arts Challenge. This is the 10th year for the community-wide initiative funding projects that help make art general in Miami.
